A ‘popular and lovely’ 13-year-old boy drowned trying to save his friend after she fell into a river.
Declan Shanley and his friends had been playing in the River Kelvin on Saturday evening, when one of them got into trouble.
Declan tried to help her, but was swept away by the current.
Police said Declan had been very brave, and his head teacher said a special assembly would be held at his school on Monday to remember him.
As you can see Declan really cared about his friends and wanted to keep his friends safe.
As the warm weather approaches and many children seek to cool off in lakes, ponds and rivers, the warning is to remember your water safety. There are always things lurking beneath the still of the water that can cause great problems for you. While it may seem a fun thing to do, most bodies of water are deep and once in the water, children find it too difficult to get out.
Please everyone, take care near water.
